“Solaris […] materializes the innermost fantasies which support our desire. The story is about […] his attempt to come to terms with a repressed truth

Kelvin, the hero, finds at his side in his bed his dead wife, Harey, who, years ago on Earth, killed herself after he had abandoned her. Kelvin grasps that Harey is a materialization of his own innermost traumatic fantasies.

Tarkovsky himself put it in an interview: “Maybe, effectively, the mission of Kelvin on Solaris has only one goal: to show that love of the other is indispensable to all life. A man without love is no longer a man’” – Less Than Nothing – Slavoj Zizek
